Meeting with the Ministry of Education

Our organization along with the CDA met with the Ministry this week.  At this time the Ministry is looking to provide some general education to schools to help ensure that staff have some basic knowledge of the disease.  While education and awareness are very important, we will continue to work with the Government to ensure policies are put in place.  Children with diabetes are currently at risk in our education system and much more than basic education is required.  We commend the Minsitry for taking the first step and are looking forward to continuing the dialogue.

Human Rights Case Filed in BC

To ensure the safety of children with diabetes in BC, a human rights application has been filed and with other families joining the case it looks like it may be a class action type suit.  To get involved or to learn more information please contact John Paul Morrison at jmorrison@unsafeatschool.ca

The School Health Support Services (SHSS) report is out

If you receive services from CCAC, please review the 15 key recommendations from the final report and complete the survey.

One point of interest for parents of children with diabetes is in section 6.1.1

In some areas, diabetes management related to insulin monitoring, administration and snack management is supported by the SHSS program through nursing services. In other areas diabetes management is not supported by SHSS because it is considered to be an activity of daily living that does not require nursing supervision by some CCACs. Because educators often report that they do not feel comfortable providing insulin monitoring support for children with stable diabetes, this can be seen as a need for which the SHSS program is not providing sufficient access.

Another Province has implemented guidelines for dealing with diabetes in schools.  We are thrilled for our friends in Nova Scotia.  Take good note of glucagon requirment.
